Symptoms of Sciatica

As mentioned, sciatica iswoman experiences sciatica pain in leg a syndrome, so it’s not a specific disease process but rather a collection of symptoms which can occur for one of several reasons (discussed shortly). Some of the most common symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Buttocks and groin pain
  • Leg pain running from the posterior thigh to the foot (it often feels sharp, shooting, burning, searing, or stabbing)
  • Muscle pain and achiness in the lower back and buttocks (this can be caused by reflexive guarding and may feel more dull and achy)
  • Numbness, tingling, and weakness in the leg

Leg symptoms (rather than back symptoms) are typically the most prominent and problematic in sciatica. Symptoms will usually only affect one side of the body, and they may come and go depending on your activity, stress level, and posture.

Causes of Sciatica

So, what exactly is causing all these symptoms? First, we need a short anatomy lesson.

Exiting near the bottom of your spinal cord are the two largest nerves in your body called the sciatic nerves. These nerves are like mirror images of each other and come out of the spinal cord on the right and left side if your body in your lumbar area.

With sciatica, one of these nerves becomes compressed by some structure near its exit point from the spinal cord. This could be caused by a disc herniation or disc bulge, a bony spur associated with osteoarthritis, or a joint subluxation or narrowed joint space such as in the case of degenerative disc disease or stenosis.

Your likelihood for sciatica may increase if you stand a lot for work or have a highly physically demanding job or sport; if you’re overweight; if you’re highly sedentary; if you smoke; and if you’re a male between the ages of 35-55.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions on Sciatica (Sciatic Nerve Pain) . Sciatica is one of the more common neurological problems faced by the public. But some people have never heard of this cause of mysterious leg pain and other symptoms — or if they suffer from the disorder, they may not know what they can do about it. If you’re in this boat, you’ll want to arm yourself with the key information that can guide you toward the proper course of treatment. Here are some frequently asked questions on the subject from Back to Mind Chiropractic.

The word “sciatica” refers broadly to irritation of dysfunction of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is your body’s longest and thickest nerve, extending from nerve roots at the lower spine through the buttock and deep down into the leg. If this tissue becomes pinched, it can no longer relay sensory and motor information correctly.

Sciatica can affect both the sciatic nerve itself and any of the lesser nerves that extend from the sciatic nerve to the leg and foot. This means that you may experience shooting pains in your leg, especially when you’re sitting. But you can also experience pain, numbness, “pins and needles,” or loss of muscle control in any part of the affected extremity.

Most sciatica sufferers develop this neurological syndrome as a by-product of age-related musculoskeletal changes. Bulging discs, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and chronic spinal alignment problems can all put pressure on the lumbar nerve roots attached to the sciatic nerve. This kind of sciatica tends to appear after the age of 30.

People of any age can get sciatica. In addition to age-related causes, sciatica can occur as the result of an acute herniated disc or change in spinal alignment (as in an auto accident or sports accident). Poor posture, obesity or pregnancy can also produce sciatica symptoms. In some people, swelling of the piriformis muscle in the buttock can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, a problem known as piriformis syndrome.

Sciatica can deceive you by disappearing after weeks of torture, making you think that the problem has healed itself. But it will continue to recur if you don’t deal with the underlying reasons for the nerve compression.

Any sciatica doctor on our four-practitioner team will use a combination of spinal imaging, discussion of your medical history, and observation of your symptoms to determine which of your nerve roots have been affected by compression (and to rule out other potential causes of your discomfort). By adding up all the factors contributing to your sciatica, we can create a personalized treatment plan to correct it without surgery.

Chiropractic care can relieve nerve compression caused by spinal alignment problems. Our adjustments shift spinal components back into their preferred positions. This literally takes the “pinch” off of your pinched nerve tissue, allowing it to conduct signally normally once again.

In addition to chiropractic treatment, your sciatica doctor at Back to Mind may prescribe corrective exercises to help you develop stronger back support, reducing your risk of musculoskeletal misalignment. Spinal Decompression is an amazing treatment to alleviate the pressure put on the Sciatic Nerve. We may also recommend postural and lifestyle changes to help you minimize pressures on your spinal column that might lead to sciatica.
